August Meeting – Auction
As previously announced this meeting will be an auction. We are asking members to donate a plant or two for this auction which will give members an opportunity to buy some good plants, and will also raise some money for the society.
Some of the plants already donated are
- Coelogynes – Linda Buckley, Unchained Melody, tomentosa, pandurata.
- Dendrobiums – Hilda Poxon, Delicatum, speciosum, others
- Zygopetalums – various
- Cymbidiums – lowianum hybrid, others
- Phalaenopsis
If you are thinking of donating a plant it doesn’t have to be in flower or in spike, but please make sure it is clearly labelled
Members are reminded that they can pay by cash, cheque or IOU.
September Meeting
Please note that we are holding the September meeting a week later than usual, i.e. on 13th September because we will be setting up for the show on the normal date.
This meeting will be a social meeting. Several members have said that they would like to have a meeting where we had more time to talk with each other. The plan is to have a brief business session and then have supper with an opportunity for people to talk with each other.
And a reminder for people to bring along some supper so this can be a successful evening.
Beginner’s Workshop
The next beginners workshop will be held at Gordon Clarke’s on 5th August. We gather at about 9.30 for tea/coffee and the workshop starts at 10. This workshop will be to look at how plants have coped with the winter, and how to prepare them for the spring growing season.
Everyone is welcome.
The workshop is at 26 Pullen Street, Woolgoolga and the phone number is 6654 2553.
Committee Report
The committee met at Mangrove Jacks on 24th July. Main issues discussed were
- Upcoming auction
- Plans for the Spring Show
- Social meeting for September
- How to improve the table talk part of our meeting
Lost Orchid
A slipper orchid was left behind after the July meeting. Is it yours? Please let Ed know asap so it can be returned.
Peter King’s Talk
Peter King talked about cymbidiums. Weather has been the main problem this year. Sydney society publishes a diary to work out what to do with cymbidiums and when to do it.
Peter got most of his orchids in Victoria from various nurseries e.g. Kimberley Orchids. Spoke about the type of fertilizer he uses and the growing medium. He rows them under 50% shade cloth, which seems to be sufficient. Many articles are available in The Australian Orchid Review. Answered members questions. An excellent talk, Thanks Pete
